Whippoorwill Academy and Village
A delightful step back in time - featuring Whippoorwill Academy, the Smokehouse Gallery, Matt's Store, Daniel Boone Replica Cabin, Chapel of Peace, Dooley's Coffee Shop and Kilby's Blacksmith Shop and Weaving Room. Open each Saturday and Sunday 3-8PM and during the week by appointment. There is no admission - however - all donations are appreciated. Windsong on the Yadkin River Canoes
Located at the Whippoorwill Academy and Village near the Yadkin River in Ferguson, North Carolina. Take a canoe trip on the Yadkin River - a river rich in history! Daniel Boone once lived along its banks and Tom (Dooley) Dula of the famous Kingston Trio ballad is buried at the bend of the river. It's right along the Overmountain Victory Trail and follows the paths taken during Stoneman's Raid during the Civil War. For Information and Reservations call 336-921-3558 or 336-984-6008.

The Wilkes County Public Library

In addition to Karen Reynolds' Tom Dooley: A Wilkes County Legend, the Wilkes County Public Library holds copies of John Foster West's The Ballad of Tom Dula: The Documented Story Behind the Murder of Laura Foster and the Trials and Execution of Tom Dula and Lift Up Your Head Tom Dooley: The True Story of the Appalachian Murder that Inspired One Of America's Most Popular Ballads as well as Thomas W. Ferguson's Tom Dooley. They own several biographies of Zebulon Vance as well as bound collections of his papers and letters.

In their local history and genealogy room, the library has vertical files on the following families: Barnes, Carter, Cowles, Dula, Ferguson, Foster, Gilbert, Scott, and Winkler. They offer access to HeritageQuest, an online genealogy database that holds over 250,000 titles. They have Family Tree Maker software as well as numerous genealogy materials in print and on microfilm. Genealogy tutorials are available by appointment and genealogy classes are offered on demand.
